I trained as a Mediator and Negotiator.
Mediation is when a third party (the mediator) uses a process to help the parties work through their conflict and determine their own outcome . It is often used as an alternative to and sometimes in conjunction with the legal system. I use an interest-based model of mediation and find it very effective in resolving conflict.
The greatest benefits of mediation include:
- Time Effective – conflict can be resolved in a relatively short period of time
- Cost Effective – considerably less money than pursuing legal action
- Control – both parties remain in complete control over their situation and the outcome
Mediation is often used (but not limited to) the following situations:
- separation/divorce
- small claims
- neighbour disputes
- business disputes
- family disputes (living will, power of attorney, wills)
Mediation must be done in person, so I can only accept mediation clients in Southern Alberta.
It should be noted that mediated agreements in Alberta are not legally binding. However, a mediated agreement can easily be taken to a lawyer (if necessary, like in a divorce) to be drawn up quickly at the least expense possible.
Rates for mediation: $85/hour
